APPIC Internship Applications: Let Your Autobiographical Essay Shine. Fall is in the air#8230;the leaves are changing. It#8217;s a time of transformation and reflection. This is also the research outline perfect time to reflect on who you are and essay, how to express that to paper internship directors. One of the most important and most scrutinized materials in your APPIC internship application is the autobiographical essay (Essay #1) , yet most students agree it is the classification drivers hardest to write. Outline. While there is no exact method that is is a good thesis statement, “right,” there is some strategy to it, and below I’m sharing some tips for how to make the best impression and maximize the impact of your essay. Media Research Paper. There is very little in your application, apart from this essay, that really gives directors a feel for who you are as a person; this is entirely different than the credentials you submit that are focused exclusively on your training. In addition to a good training fit (that I discussed in my last blog entry), directors want to work with someone they feel they can connect with , and this is your opportunity to bloomsburg reveal your personality to them. This essay should focus on you as a person, so while you need to research outline keep it relevant (see #6), this means more than just a list of your training experiences or graduate school accomplishments.

They can already see that in the other materials you submit; remember, don’t squander this opportunity to classification introduce directors to the “personal you” that they can’t see elsewhere. Be genuine. Be yourself. Don#8217;t try to write an essay about something that you think sounds good but isn’t truly authentic; trying to figure out what kind of intern sites are looking for, and trying to research paper outline create a narrative to fit that, is not a good strategy . Bloomsburg University Essay. If you identified your true training goals and selected sites that are a good fit, then your authentic (well-conveyed) narrative should naturally appeal to directors of those sites. When deciding on a focus for the autobiographical essay, consider what you really want to media research paper outline convey to is a thesis directors, what quality or personal characteristic you possess that makes you uniquely you, and paper outline, how that contributes to for a paper apa making you a more evolved or self-aware, or uniquely empathic, etc. Media Research Paper Outline. emerging clinician. If appropriate, consider discussing life-changing events that define who you are. Even negative life events such as loss, illness, adversity, etc. can be discussed, but focus on how these events were transformative in a positive way and what lessons or insights you learned, not on how tragic they were.

The emphasis should be on how you coped with it, learned from it, overcame it, and eventually, used it, to become more self-aware and grow from it . You can convey a compelling story about something that may have been difficult, but maintain the focus on the positive. Essays Drivers. This essay should move the reader and let him or her really get a glimpse of who you are. By the end of it, you want the reader thinking, “I’d really like to meet/work with this person.” Try to stay away from paper outline cliches and the trap of writing about how you were “always interested in psychology” or “everyone always thought I was a good listener.” While that may be true, something personal had to an essay someone who inspires have drawn you to the field. Media Paper. If you can identify that, and really create a sincere and an essay someone who inspires, engaging narrative about research paper it, while tying it in to your evolution as a psychologist, you will have a more compelling (and successful) essay. Thesis Statement. Not everything that’s happened to us that we think is important will be relevant for this essay. Ask yourself, “Does talking about this issue, or event, or aspect of media research, myself, really convey the message I want?” and is it genuinely related in how to an outline for a some way to your evolution as a clinician, or healer? Again, don’t “force” that connection; it should be a natural one. If it’s not, then reconsider the media paper outline essay topic. If your interest in psychology was naturally more academic than related to a personal event or circumstance, or you would simply prefer not to talk about your private personal life, that’s ok. However, it still needs to be a personal essay, so consider some aspect of university admissions essay, your work with patients that is genuinely compelling for you, and research outline, try to craft an essay around that.

You can start by thinking about university a particular patient, or a specific moment with a patient(s) that truly moved you, or validated your desire and the meaning of being a healer . You should still begin the essay with some kind of anecdote that captures this, and then work from there. This can also make for a very compelling essay. Remember, directors are reading LOTS of research outline, these essays, so keeping them engaged is half the strategy . Having a compelling story with a well written narrative is necessary. Consider starting with a very engaging, or #8220;seductive#8221; first sentence that can really grab the kindness thesis reader, right from the beginning, and media outline, make them want to read on. Essay On Torture. It doesn’t have to outline be a long sentence, and how to write an outline for a paper apa, it can even be a quote, a song lyric—anything that captures the essence of your message. Start with that and media paper, build the essay around it.

Make sure to persuasive essay on torture somehow make reference to paper outline it at the end too; wrapping up your essay by classification drivers connecting it back to the beginning is also a good strategy. Media Research Outline. It should tell a story about you, with a beginning, middle and end . Make sure it sends a cohesive message about you. Try to utilize transitional sentences when bridging topics, and don#8217;t forget a summary statement at the end that ties it all together and really brings your message home. It should wrap back, at the end, to how this “story” about you ultimately translates into who you are (as a clinician) in the room with the bloomsburg university patient . How is the aspect of media paper outline, yourself you decided to write about an asset as a therapist? If it’s something transformative that really had an impact on you, chances are you have learned something profound from it about human nature, and how to write research, about yourself, which helps your understanding of patients—so make sure to state that in some way. Research Paper. Tip #10: Remember the Word Limit#8230;Unless You#8217;re Writing. We all know the word limit is 500, and I know doing everything I described above in 500 words or less is definitely a challenge.

However, try not to censor yourself and worry about the length AS you’re writing—just write . You can edit later. If you find your essay is way too long, consider whether you need a “hatchet” or “scalpel” approach —that is, can you cut entire sections or sentences without compromising the how to an outline research apa message or the research outline quality of the writing, or do you perhaps need to write an essay about someone you go in and condense sentences and be more parsimonious in expressing yourself? That being said, if you go up to 550 or even 560-ish, that’s ok; no director is research paper outline, going to think you are a “bad” match or that you can’t follow instructions because you went a little over 500 words; it’s a guideline, so use it as such. Do not make arbitrary cuts simply to reach that number. As long as it fits onto a single page with 1-inch margins, it should be ok. Write An Essay About Someone Who Inspires You. Most directors just gauge the length by “eyeballing” it; no one is really counting words . If it looks the media paper outline average length, it’s fine, if you go over the word limit significantly, and it’s obvious, it probably won’t matter by how much at that point—the (negative) impression has been made. Tip #11: Don#8217;t Forget it#8217;s a Writing Sample! Make sure to show off your writing skills and always check for typos, grammar and language. Have someone with good editing skills read it and comment on it, but be careful about taking advice about the content of the essay if your audience doesn’t really have a context for knowing what directors are looking for.

Many people mean well, especially family and friends, but they may not be the best judges. If you do want “lay” people—read: non-psychologists or those unconnected to the internship process—review it, then the best way to make the most out of it, rather than simply asking for open-ended feedback, is to an essay give them a lot of context for it, and paper outline, explain a little bit about what you aim to write an outline for a research paper apa convey BEFORE they read the essay. After they’ve read it, see if they agree you’ve conveyed your message in a strong, positive, compelling fashion. Introduction to Andre Bazin, Part 1: Theory of Film Style in its Historical Context. Andre Bazin, film critic, theorist, philosopher, and media, humanist wrote a series of essays between the years 1944 and 1958, before he died at the young age of 40. The majority of them were anthologized in their original language in the four volume set Qu’est- ce que le cinema? Selections from these four volumes were translated by Hugh Gray and presented in two English volumes: What is Cinema? Other major works translated into English include Jean Renoir, Orson Welles: A Critical View, and French Cinema of the Occupation and the Resistance.

A recent collection of essays translated into English is Bazin At Work : Major Essays And Reviews From The Forties And Fifties , edited by Bert Cardullo. Other crucial non- anthologized articles are found in the journals Esprit, Cahiers du Cinema and bloomsburg essay, Les Temps Modernes . Given the breadth of his work, I have limited myself in this introduction to his theoretical work and media paper, omitted his critical work on essays drivers, genre/cycles (the Western, Neo-realism) and/or specific films. In my exposition of these writings I do not purport to media paper outline, be exhaustive, but rather to arrive at an understanding of Bazin’s cinematic beliefs. By expounding, commenting on, and making necessary connections I will attempt to synthesize a complex man and a complicated thesis, his works into a manageable form. Any element of criticism is a residue of the rigorous thought process propelled by his writings. THE ESSENCE OF CINEMA. Bazin sees cinema as “an idealistic phenomenon” and only consequently technical. Being a humanist he believes that the media research paper outline idea precedes the invention and hence is superior to the technical means used to achieve it. He categorizes the early pioneers (Muybridge, Niepce, Leroy, Demeny, Joy, Edison, Lumiere) as “ingenious industrialists” at good best. Later, in his now famous essay “The Evolution of the Language of Cinema” he would extrapolate this formula of “idea necessitating technical means” into complexity of subject matter necessitating a new form/style. To Bazin the cinema is inherently realistic because of the research paper mechanical mediation of the camera.

This is not the same as saying that cinema is “objective” in any sense other than relative, and that cinema is untouched by ideological and cultural factors, as many of Bazin’s critics have said. Classification? What Bazin does do with this fact is place cinema above painting – the camera vs. the brush- as a medium for duplicating reality. Further, cinema’s ability to record the research paper event in time, making “an imprint of the duration of the write an outline research paper apa object” elevates it above photography. Although the potential for human intervention is always present, even granting the mechanical intervention, Bazin believes that the media research filmmaker owes it to the complexity of persuasive, reality to research outline, refrain from false subjective manipulation and overwrought formalist mediation. The “myth” of total cinema Bazin speaks of is a reflection of humanity’s psychological and indeed ethical, obsession in the arts with depicting reality. 1 Possibly as a means of countering mortality, humanity has forever been attempting to preserve his/her likeness in one form or another. Drivers? As Prakash Younger notes in his involved argumentation in his Offscreen essay, there is an ethical and moral link between the real world and the practice of artistic creation and spectatorial reception of art which informs the research “aesthetic” practice and theory of Bazin. This moral and classification essays, ethical link does not circumvent the ideological, but stands as a way through the paper “impasse” of the ideological, or, to once again quote Prakash, “pseudorealism” to a complicated, get at the “true realism.” As time evolved so did the means of artistically replicating reality, from cave drawings, to mummification, to engraving, to paper, painting, to photography, and to what is a, its (thus far) most convincing form, cinema. Media Outline? In the task of kindness, duplicating reality cinema has surpassed all other forms of representation. Bazin envisions each rung on cinema’s evolutionary ladder as a step toward a more realistic depiction of the world (sound, color, depth of field, 3- D,etc.).

Since Bazin believes that the origins of an art reveal its nature, cinema’s quest for realism supports his claim for an objective and pure cinema. This “myth” which grew out of cinema’s beginnings stands as the touchstone cinema has progressively evolved toward. Much of the media confusion concerning Bazin’s writings – and indeed a major concern in the canon of film theory- is traceable to the relationship between the an essay someone who inspires filmed image and its life counterpart. How does Bazin explain this relationship? He describes it in the following terms: 1) The photographic image is “a kind of media outline, decal or transfer”; 2) “The photographic image is the essays drivers object itself, the object freed from the conditions of time and space that govern it”; 3) Photography embalms time; 4) “The photograph as such and the object in itself share a common being, after the research outline fashion of a fingerprint”; 5) “In no sense is it the image of an object or persons, more correctly it is its tracing”; 6) “The photograph proceeds … to the taking of a veritable luminous impression in light – to a mold. As such it carries with it more than mere resemblance, namely a kind of identity …”; 7) “The cinema … makes an imprint of the duration of the object.” 2 The words Bazin uses are essentially synonyms: decal, transfer, fingerprint, tracing, mold, imprint. The reverberations suggest a quasi- mystical relationship between the subject and persuasive essay on torture, its photographic double. Media Paper? Given Bazin’s strong Catholic background it may or may not be begging credulity to mention at this point an underlying presence of religious reverberation in lines two and six.

Line two says that the photographic image is the object itself, only “freed” from time and space. By “freeing” the object Bazin is implying a form of salvation or transgression to a higher moral/spiritual plateau. Is A? Line seven emits a spiritual echo through the words “a veritable luminous impression in light.” Could the photographic reproduction be in a symbolic sense the soul of its real life counterpart? Even when, in his article “La Technique du Citizen Kane ,” 3 Bazin defends Welles against George Sadoul’s charges of unoriginality he concludes with the paper outline spiritualistic thought that Welles, the modern artist, has left behind (through his films) “a resonance the likes of which we have never known before” (my translation). I offer this as a possible interpretation for the consistently allegorical tone of Bazin’s writings concerning the relationship between the subject/object and its filmic double. THE EVOLUTION OF THE LANGUAGE OF CINEMA : an Exploration of cinema style.

In this section I will lay out Bazin’s seminal discussion of the historical evolution of film style. I should stress that my aim here is to explicate this trajectory rather than situate it within Bazin’s broader theoretical ideas. I admit that even the few criticisms I make with regard Bazin’s critical application of realist style can be smoothed over by relating Bazin’s analysis of cinematic language to his larger philosophical and classification drivers, theoretical aims. With the championing of media, realism as the is a good statement eventual goal, Bazin wrote a thoughtful historical overview of the evolution of film language. The major tenet coming from this overview is that the media research paper outline jump from silent to sound cinema was not the major evolutional point in film language. That breakthrough point would arrive several years later (1940-41).

Bazin’s starting point for how to an outline for a paper apa his historical overview is the silent period. Research Paper? Employing a stylistic and semi-auteur approach he groups all directors between the years 1920 to 1940 into two groups: one which base their integrity in the image (the imagists) and persuasive, another which base their integrity in reality (the realists). The imagists are broken down into two camps, those working with the research paper outline plastics (lighting, decor, composition, acting) and those working with the write you editing (the montagists). The realists do not distort time (like the montagists) or space (like the expressionists) but attempt to depict true reality. The major exponents of the realist camp are F.W.

Murnau, Eric Von Stroheim, Robert Flaherty, Carl Dreyer, and Jean Renoir. The montagists are also broken down into paper outline two camps, distinguished mainly by an essay a time frame: 1920- 30 (Abel Gance, D.W. Griffith, Sergei Eisenstein) and 1930- 40 (the American classical “invisible” style, influenced largely, I believe, by Vsevelod Pudovkin). The end of the silent period brought the two “image” camps to their apex in the form of German Expressionism (the plastics) and the Soviet Post-Revolution cinema (the montagists). The jump from the silent to sound cinema did not give evidence to any immediate effects on shooting or editing styles. By the late 30’s sound moved editing toward realism, switching the operative cutting style from symbolic/expressive to dramatic/analytic. Editing style became more or less standardized. Research Paper Outline? Cinema reached a point of classical perfection where content fused with form. By now, 1939, cinema had reached the point where most technical innovations were established (color, track, dolly, crane, zoom, sound, panchromatic film stock) and a complicated kindness, the next evolutionary advancement, if there was to be one, would not be propelled by a technical matter but a thematic one: the paper outline subject matter and the effect it imposed on technical/formal aspects. The result of this was, according to Bazin, the essay on torture most important aesthetic revolution in film history, the arrival of the mise-en-scene style. In brief then, here is Bazin’s evolution of film language: a) Plastics (lighting, decor, composition, acting) b) Montagists (editing)

2) The Realists:(long take, on location shooting, objective approach) By 1928 the Imagists peak with a) expressionism and b) Soviet cinema. Early sound films do not show immediate advancement of either style. By the late 30’s sound technique leads montage toward realism. By the late 30’s we witness the perfect fusion of form/content, sound/image. Film reaches its “equilibrium- profile” ( Jezebel , Stagecoach , Le Jour se leve ). By 1939 all major technical advancements are established; the next step in evolution of style is spurred by subject matter. a) Pure objective realism (Neo- Realism, Documentary) b) Spatial Realism (Jean Renoir, Orson Welles, William Wyler). The implication in Bazin’s historical evolution is that by the 1940’s the imagist style had been completely engulfed by media outline the realist style. The imagists, having had their glory days in the silent period, were confronted by the realists and, after a realist maturation period in the 30’s, overtaken by them.

A graph would read: A new type of Realism evolves, splitting up into two camps, as did the Imagists during the silent period, and totally dominating 1940: a) Spatial realists; and b) Pure objective realists. This historical progress toward realism is in perfect accordance with Bazin’s notion of the cinema continually inching forward toward the pure “myth” of total cinema. The force of History does not always obey, and this movement does not hold true for is a thesis long. Media Research Paper? There is some historical truth in Bazin’s schema because, indeed, the imagists did dominate during the silent period, as did the realists during the later 30’s, but Bazin’s contention of the post 1940 period being dominated by the realist style is quickly but into question by film-noir, a movement/style derivative of German Expressionism. Nowhere in What is Cinema Vol. 1 2 do we see even a passing remark at write who inspires you film noir or the expressionistic-like Universal horror films of the 30’s. Paper? This oversight is surprising, especially with the evidence already building around Bazin toward the evolutionary direction which the good dialectics of media research paper outline, realism/formalism would take: toward a harmonious existence where the two become more or less equal and interchangeable operative modes of a complex art form.

4. I would also add that Bazin underplays the importance of sound transition to university admissions, emphasize his spatial-temporal ontological theory of realism. He realized how important a step sound was toward realism, eliminating the need for expressivity and media outline, “denaturalization” that was a large part of silent cinema. Persuasive Essay On Torture? However, Bazin overlooks just how important a psychological role sound played in achieving the impression of reality, and the impression of space and depth that were so important to him. Sound added immensely to realism in research paper, cinema but Bazin, perhaps so as not to interfere with his spatial/temporal claim, downplays it.

He clearly emphasizes the psychological role with regard to the visuals, so the omission may be a result of sound theory not yet entering into the general discourse of film analysis. This aural component is still excluded by many people today when discussing the claim to realism cinema has over other arts. I must mention a final slender point of classification, disagreement. By including Murnau and Dreyer as realists Bazin is falling into the same trap that Siegfried Kracauer does when he accepts certain fantastical/formalistic scenes when they are in the proper “realist” context, such as a dream or a specific point of media, view (Tudor 94). Bazin is on shaky ground when he removes Nosferatu and persuasive essay on torture, The Passion of Joan of Arc from the expressionistic mode on the frail basis of Nosferatu ‘s on-location photography and Dreyer’s refrain from the use of make-up for media research outline his actors (Bazin, What is Cinema Vol.1 109-110). Thesis? What then becomes of Nosferatu ‘s sinister shadows, fast motion and negative photography, and expressionistic acting, and The Passion of Joan of Arc ‘s abstraction of space and extreme reliance on close-ups? In neither case do the media research outline slim realist tendencies compensate for the overwhelming artistic intervention, as does Welles’ spatial realism for example. Admissions Essay? Both films fail to completely qualify for either of Bazin’s realistic camps –the documentary- like “pure” realism or the spatial realism.

Although one can argue that Nosferatu is ‘more realist’ than other expressionist films of the time, and media outline, that The Passion of Joan of Arc is so unique and iconoclastic in style, that the affect on the spectator is one of realism. Having pointed toward Bazin’s preference for the mise-en-scene style I will now discuss his reasons for that choice. The depth of field/long take style, known as mise-en-scene, attracted itself to Bazin for two essential reasons: a) It maintained the unity of space and the relationship between the objects within that space. b) It gave the spectator, according to Bazin, the freedom to direct his/her own control over the viewing process, including what to look at, in what order, for how long, and to make their own synthesis of that viewing process. Together they maintain the ambiguity – the existential ambiguity present all around us in life- of that space. Mise-en-scene can incorporate two styles, one being a documentary-like process where the camera “allows us to see” the bloomsburg university event (Neo- Realism) and a second more aesthetic rendition of reality where the realism derives almost exclusively from the respect for spatial unity (Welles, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Theo Angelopoulos). An integral part of the mise-en-scene style is the presence of depth of field.

Bazin wrote entirely on media research, this aspect in the article “Pour en finir avec la profondeur de champ” (“My Final Words on Depth of Field”) ( Cahiers du Cinema . University? 17-23). This article begins by stating that depth of field belongs only incidentally to the technical domain (my translation): If depth of field interests us it is only incidentally as a technical progress of a shooting style and, essentially, as a revolution of mise-en-scene or, more precisely, ‘decoupage’ (19). Here he sets down the kernel for the balance of the article. Bazin examines a frame from the 1910 film Onesime (Louis Feuillade) and media research paper outline, sees in its composition in depth and soft focus the seeds for the later more refined depth of field style. The shot in questions has the title character framed in persuasive essay on torture, left, extreme close-up, with a secondary character visible in the right background of the media research paper outline frame (my translation): Something outside of Feuillade’s genius allowed him to spontaneously discover a prophetic frame, a rough outline of a Renoir or Wellesian shot. In this case, the kindness thesis discovery was not out of genius, but out of necessity – he did not have a choice (20).

Given the technical state of 1910 the shot succeeds partly; both planes are visible but the background is soft. Again, giving the state of cinematography (to render a clear, legible image) and research paper outline, the state of audience awareness the softness of the write you background appears as a default. Media Outline? With the ameliorization of the depth of field shooting style and the parallel advancement of audience awareness, soft focus becomes a technique (rack focus and classification drivers, softening of a part of the image for an effect) and takes on a different meaning, that of decoupage. 5 The soft focus effect is (my translation) … an indirect means in media research, which to place value in write about, the shot which is being focused; it transcribes in the frame the dramatic hierarchy which montage expresses in time. In this new complex perception the clarity of the background is no longer indispensable; soft focus is no longer experienced like an improbability: it becomes contrast and not contradiction ( Cahiers du Cinema 22). In a pre-montage context Feuillade foreshadows the true sense of depth of field – the ability to research, preclude montage through decoupage in depth. Good? 6 According to Bazin decoupage in depth approaches a realism in an ontological sense, restoring to objects their existential density.

All elements, actor/object and foreground/background are fused into one perceptual pattern (Bazin, Orson Welles , 80). A final quote serves, perhaps more than any other, as a testament to media outline, Bazin’s burning stance as “realist” theorist (my translation): In classical style when a character becomes secondary he is usually eliminated from the scene. What Thesis? Welles maintains that his play not be so precise, but to media paper, keep the character “alive” so as to allow the spectators to continually dispense their attention. We must constantly be on the lookout for principal actions which can produce itself “behind our backs” so to essay on torture, speak. Here a part is taken from reality; a way of posing reality homogenous, of media research paper, considering it indivisible and persuasive, accruing equal weight to all coordinates of the screen. Research Paper? All the decor and all the classification drivers actors in the total image are equally offered to the action and at the same time to our attention. Paper Outline? If they remain outside it is nothing but a hazard as equally unpredictable as an isolated result of the an outline for a numbers game (Bazin, Les Temps Modernes 947). Unlike Eisenstein, who wrote voluminously on montage and comparatively little on its antithesis, Bazin wrote substantially on montage. Media Research? Bazin describes editing as a “series of an essay about someone who inspires you, either logical or subjective points of view of an event.” Dealing with sound films, he lists three motives for research paper outline cutting: 1) As a purely logical descriptive analysis of the narrative 2) As a psychological analysis from a character’s point of view and 3) As a psychological analysis from the how to write for a apa audience’s point of media outline, view. (Strangely, he shortly thereafter refers to how to write an outline for a apa, them as “arbitrary”) ( What is media research Cinema Vol.

1 , 92). Bazin opposes classical and expressive editing on the following counts. Essay? The simple geographically and psychologically logical (dramatic) cutting within a scene does not add anything to the intent of a scene, only adding emphasis. So why bother? If the scene has only one simple meaning why insult the audience’s intelligence with needless and obvious close-ups? Contrarily, if the scene is complex why presuppose only media research paper outline one meaning? Expressive editing invents meaning through juxtaposition of the images and not through the images themselves. This is trickery; it removes the freedom on the part of the spectator to select for him or herself and removes whatever existential ambiguity may be present in the scene. Therefore it is not faithful to reality, either spatially, temporally, or morally.

Bazin is not against editing which forms the persuasive essay on torture basis of film structure, that is cutting necessary to join unconnected scenes/sequences, but is against optical illusions (superimpositions, dissolves, process shots), needless pedestrian editing within a single scene, and expressive editing that adds meaning through the juxtaposition rather than content of each image. Bazin employs a simple aesthetic criteria for media research paper deciding when to write an essay who inspires you, edit: anytime two or more objects/subjects are necessary to the construction of meaning in a scene, depth of media research, field is preferable over editing. Bazin opposes the contention that editing is a more realistic depiction of the physiological viewing process on several counts. Logical cutting according to drama, narrative, and anticipation constructs a sense of an integral space. The master shot establishes a location so that the cutting to on torture, points within is physically (spatially) understood; the dramatic action makes it psychologically understood. This cutting leads the audience along and is usually one step ahead of them. Bazin sees this as only one of two possible modes of realism. This mode appropriates the realism of the media research narrative process and the mental process following it. The second mode of essay, realism appropriates the event itself. The implication is that there is a choice between one type of reality and another.

Here it is instructive to research, recall Younger’s distinction in Bazin’s understanding of bloomsburg admissions essay, realism in art between “pseudorealism” and “true realism” -the former being caught in media, the trappings of ideology or meaningless formal articulations. All arts share in bloomsburg university, this inability to research outline, completely capture reality, but there are differing ways of countering this problem. The true realist does not fight against this opposition but merely tries to accommodate it through sincerity and honesty. According to Bazin, within the historical conditions of the thesis 1940s and 1950s, the best way to achieve this was by means of spatial integrity, depth of field, and paper outline, the long take mise-en-scene. Cinema can never totally duplicate the bloomsburg admissions essay viewing process – physiologically and psychologically. Paper? That would be impossible, and if possible it would be a visual quagmire.

Bazin realizes that the human eye does not perceive a scene in the same way as a camera recording a scene in depth of field and/or long take. This limitation becomes a virtue. By being faithful to the space and the event itself the spectator is able to perceive this hypothetical scene with greater insight and clarity than if he/she were physically present at bloomsburg admissions the scene. Paper Outline? The reality of filmic space and the filmic event supercedes the human perception of it. The essay “The Virtues and Limitations of Montage” presents, in persuasive essay, the strongest possible sense, Bazin’s mistrust for media montage and discloses the essence of his preference for the mise-en-scene style. Bazin denounces the university “trickery” of montage, evident in the animal film by media research paper Jean Tourane.

Here montage becomes emblematic of its untruthfulness – by what is a good relating the human qualities of animals by virtue of off-screen guidance and editing. Outline? Later in the essay he discusses the process shot, an equally deceiving effect, and says that the write an outline point is not whether or not the trickery is noticeable, but whether or not it is used (a question of integrity). Thus far Bazin’s reasoning implies that the artist has a moral obligation to the audience and the faithful rendition of the paper outline event/space. He then uses an example from the film Where No Vultures Fly to demonstrate how much more effective depth of field is than parallel montage. (The scene has a wandering child playfully picking up a stray lion cub and then being pursued by the lioness.) The fact that the lion is tame is unimportant; this deceit is made “morally” correct because it occurs in persuasive, a homogenous space. Bazin sees no deceit in the proceedings behind a long take/depth of field shot (numerous takes, removal of walls, props, etc.) but instead wants us to neglect the causal events and consider only the final results. 7 (Contradictorily, Bazin supports his contention that photography is superior to painting by referring to their causal means – mechanical intervention vs. human intervention. Though ‘mechanical’ must be considered relatively, since all ‘tools’ (pen, brush, needle, etc) used in media research paper, art are a form, lesser perhaps, of mechanical intervention.) Through these contradictions we can decipher Bazin’s true motives for his disliking montage and classification essays drivers, upholding mise-en-scene. Montage is untruthful to spatial integrity and also deceives the audience through its juxtapositioning; therefore montage is paper of secondary importance, morally and aesthetically, to the mise-en-scene style. Essay? The integrity of spatial unity is of the utmost importance and supercedes all else – deceit included. Paper Outline? Bazin’s preference for spatial unity can also be understood as a philosophical (Bergsonian) preference, as I will point out in Part 2 of this essay.

BAZIN THE THEORETICAL WORLD. In this section I will point to some overlooked parallels between Bazin and thesis, other classical film theorists. An interesting development/argument ensues when considering Bazin’s stance toward editing in research paper outline, relation to Vsevelod Pudovkin’s theory. In Pudovkin’s illuminating and kindness, influential film theory the natural way for a filmmaker to constitute a scene is to paper outline, assume a hypothetical “perfect” observer, an essays drivers imaginary, attentive, sensitive eye which captures the scene not the way everyone would see it but the media way an acutely intense, analytical, and probing observer would. This is an ideal approach, but realistically, most directors either do not place that much thought into the editing or do not have the aptitude to, and, consequently, fall back on the more traditional editing style, to what Noel Burch terms the “zero point of cinematic style” (11). Even given the ideal, Bazin would still reject Pudovkin’s theory because of university admissions, its potential to reduce the possibility for multiple interpretations.

Deciding for or against media research paper one theory may ultimately hinge on the complexity of the particular scene. Given a simple, straightforward scene where the meaning is classification only at the surface level, Bazin’s resistance to research, the theory is tenuous, but a complex scene with possible multiple interpretations gives more credence to Bazin’s opposition. Trying to select between Pudovkin’s ideal observer and Bazin’s democratic observer becomes more problematic if pursued further. Let’s take Bazin’s favorite example, the seal hunt scene from Nanook of the North . What Good Thesis? Bazin says that a traditional editing pattern would have ruined the research outline impact of the single take scene. This may be true, but if that were indeed the bloomsburg university admissions best way to view that scene then Pudovkin’s ideal observer would also watch it from the same fixed viewpoint. The argument could go on and on. Paper Outline? In principle, Bazin opposes the fragmentation of what is a good statement, any scene which could be observed in media research paper, its spatial unity. Bazin and Rudolf Arnheim, despite one being a realist and the other a formalist, begin their theories from the university essay same starting point. Both theorists begin with the contention that cinema reproduces reality mechanically. Arnheim’s end goal is the equation film=art, while Bazin’s is film=reality. Bazin accepts the contention, and in fact posits it himself, but adds to media research paper outline, it by elevating the filmic double to a spiritual/moral/ethical level.

Arnheim refutes the contention by saying that regardless of the process, even on the most elementary level the recording of an a complicated object/subject is answerable to media research outline, many factors. (Example: The problem of bloomsburg university, reproducing three dimensional objects in a two dimensional medium – positioning of media research paper, object- and the intangible aspect of intuition – deciding whether a person is more him or herself in profile or full face or whether one angle of a mountain is more expressive than another) (Arnheim, 8- 11). These decisions can not be arrived at mathematically but through human sensibility. Arnheim begins with the contention and then attempts to accord to the filmmaker the same artistic intervention of the painter. Bazin, in contrast, downplays the filmmakers intervention. Bloomsburg University Essay? In both cases the limitation – not being able to reproduce reality exactly- becomes the source for the respective ends. In Bazin’s case the film, in its faithfulness to the event, grants the spectator a privileged experience of research, that event; in Arnheim’s case the spectator experiences the event colored through the artist’s sensibility. Writers who try to is a good, reveal inconsistencies in how Bazin applied his own theory to criticism often focused on his troubled affirmation of Welles as a realist. Andrew Tudor, in Theories of Film , says that Bazin enters “deep water” in doing so because Welles is the paper outline great inheritor of German Expressionism.

Tudor, although noting the what is a good thesis two types of realism Bazin formulated – the pure realism and media outline, the spatial realism- does not allow Bazin this benefit. I can respect Tudor’s refusal to grant Bazin the benefit of persuasive essay, two types of realism, but I disagree with his reason. Tudor believes that Welles’ baroque style – the chiaroscuro lighting, the excessive camera movements, the odd angles- is, along with montage and decor, just “another – way of destroying the visual unity of space.” Bazin is media research paper outline well aware of Welles’ affinity for the baroque and classification essays, the manipulative potential mise-en-scene carries: Welles’ pictures are more difficult to analyze because of his over-fondness for the baroque. Objects and characters are related in such a fashion that it is impossible for the spectator to miss the significance of the scene. To get the same results by way of montage would have necessitated a detailed succession of shots ( What is Cinema Vol.1 34- 35). Bazin does not deny that the depth of field style can, in media research outline, that sense, appropriate montage – for that is about who inspires you Bazin’s point- and the point missed by Tudor. Tudor’s accusation that Welles fragments space with his baroque style can be read as Bazin’s “decoupage in depth.” Hence, decoupage in depth is not anomalous to Bazin’s spatial realism but an essential part of it. Although Welles inherited many traits from German Expressionism Tudor can not deny that the media paper context is how to write an outline paper apa different – within Wellesian mise-en-scene- and that there is a difference between cutting a space through montage and cutting a space “in depth” as does Welles.

It is media research paper this distinction – manipulation via editing vs. manipulation via mise-en-scene- which makes the difference for Bazin. The last theorist I will consider is Brian Henderson. He serves as an bloomsburg university endpoint to this section because Henderson exemplifies the by-product which can result from the constant need to reevaluate and think through existing theories. In his essay “Two Types of Film Theory” Henderson discusses the choice representatives of the formalist and realist camps, Eisenstein and Bazin. One of the conclusions he arrives at is that both theories, albeit drastically different, are in the general sense, ‘incomplete’ theories of the sequence. Out of this evolves Henderson’s critique of media paper outline, both theories: neither considers the relation of the part (the sequence) to the whole. They do not envision a theory of the formal construction of the total film. At this point Henderson does not posit any answers, but only raises the question of whether there can be a theory dictating the bloomsburg essay complete organization of a film. Does Bazin’s theory, in any sense, constitute a “complete” theory (disregarding his neglect of sound)? The frame/shot/scene/sequence are the principal building blocks of film, with the sequence being the largest “part.” Bazin’s mise-en-scene contains all these elements and his constant championing of mise-en-scene at the expense of montage dictates how these elements should be used; as such, this constitutes a theory of how a film should be constructed from beginning to end. Paper Outline? Although Bazin expresses approval of an outline paper apa, simple editing to join homogenous spaces (connecting scenes/sequences which in themselves are shot in depth), he never felt the need to expand on research, the relationship between long take and a complicated, editing.

Consequently, all that is missing to form a “complete theory,” in the very general sense, is a term designating this “carry- over” from sequence to paper, sequence. Henderson himself would later supply this term. In the subsequent essay “The Long Take” Henderson examines the role of persuasive, editing within the media outline long take style vis- a- vis Welles, Ophuls, and Murnau. Bloomsburg Essay? As an answer to his own query, he posits the inter and research paper, intra-sequence cuts, cuts occurring in between sequences (inter) or within sequences (intra) (See essay by David George Menard, “Toward a Syntheis of Cinema- a Theory of the Long Take Moving Camera.”). Regardless of the validity of Henderson’s theory, the an outline for a research paper apa point is that through a thought process predicated on Bazin’s theory and a need to “complete” it, Henderson constructed a theory of the sequence cut.

This interplay between contemporary and past theorist is a vital part of the theoretical world’s evolution and proves the validity of media outline, past theories. As art evolves so must the theories. In making this contention Bazin is, of classification, course, glossing over a long line of antithetical movements (Expressionism, Surrealism, etc.) revolting against this obsession with realism. #8617; All of these quotes or paraphrases are taken from What is Cinema Vol. 1 pps. 14, 15, 96, 97. #8617; Andre Bazin, Les Temps- Modernes 17, (1947), 948. Paper? Although too long to quote in for a paper, full, the latter part of this article explicitly reveals Bazin’s tendency to media paper, revert to a religious or mystical tone when supporting a claim he feels strongly for. #8617; There still are filmmakers who fall exclusively into one or the other camp, Miklos Jansco for example, but most directors utilize both styles according to their needs: Hitchcock, Godard, Kubrick, and Scorsese as prime examples #8617; There are two terms used by Bazin which either take on a different meaning in their English translation or don’t have an equivalent. Montage in English terminology implies a rigorous and expressive editing style. Most editing sequences juxtapose shots of varying space, time, and content combining to create an over- all idea, meaning, or tone.

Editing implies the formal construction of the film from one shot to the next and is not necessarily expressive. Essay On Torture? Bazin uses the terms interchangeably. Research? The second term, decoupage, has no English equivalent. Kindness? The French definition is “to cut,” but applied to film the word is better described as construction. Noel Burch, in Theory of Film Practice, defines the three terms for which decoupage is interchangeably used for as: 1) The final form of a script replete with the required technical information. 2) The practical breakdown of the film’s construction into research separate shots/sequences prior to how to an outline research paper, filming 3) The underlying structure of the outline finished film, which has probably deviated from the original “decoupage.” #8617; With the meaning of decoupage in mind, we must consider the other means by classification drivers which depth of field appropriates montage: the moving camera, especially the reframe, the zoom, lighting, props, and the use of off- screen space. #8617; The phenomenological approach at understanding the essence of phenomena also foregoes the causal series of events (Husserl’s “bracketing”). changing essays Change Theory in research, the 21 st Century. Advanced Organization Theory and Inquiry. Arkansas State University- Newport. Center for Excellence in Education. Arkansas State University. Change has occurred throughout history both when societies are ready for it and when they are not. This essay will attempt to discuss change as it relates to organizations today and in the future. This discussion will begin with definitions of several different types of change and how change relates to the process of education. Next, diffusion will be presented as well as how modern technology will affect diffusion.

The merits of different strategies of planned change in today's climate will be explored in addition to the implications of write about someone who inspires you organizational development in the 21 st century. Finally, the outline, usefulness of Deming's ideas in our society today and specific trends that affect the process of change will be discussed. Individuals and organizations view change in a variety of ways. Essay On Torture! Doing something in a different way may constitute change for some whereas to others change may mean a total restructuring of an existing system. Media Paper Outline! There are several different ways in which we view change (Jurrow, 1999). First, developmental change means to do something the same way but better. Essay! For example I may learn to be a better teacher by doing the same things I have always done but doing them in a way that is media considered better. Secondly, I could find a completely new way to do the same thing I have always done. This would be considered transitional change. For example, I may teach the same material but do it in a totally different way such as using multimedia presentations, group work, or demonstrations rather than lecture. Thirdly, transformational change means doing something different by creating new structures and new processes to fit new objectives.

I may come up with a way to do something very different by completely changing the processes that I have been using. Write Someone You! For example, I may begin to facilitate learning rather than teaching information to students, and I may do this by allowing them to research information on their own, thus, instituting a totally new procedure. Transformational change is probably more representative of what today's society is research paper outline looking for. A Complicated! Organizations have seen both developmental change and transitional change come and go with very little lasting effects. Research Outline! This may be a factor in about someone, motivating those leading our institutions to take a chance on paper outline, transformational change. Education is the Key. It has been said that order will emerge out of chaos.

While this is probably true, it is also believed that societies can direct the forces of change to suit goals and social values (Owens, 1998). Furthermore, it is believed that planned social change is supported by write who inspires you compatible educational systems. This means that the infrastructure of the educational system can be used to media paper outline, facilitate change in a positive way because it is the key to equality and equity in thesis, society. For example, education can be the means by which one's financial or social position can be elevated in our society. Because educational organizations are expected to transmit traditional values and also to media outline, be a vehicle for change, they must balance the implications of stability and change at kindness thesis, the same time.

Many now believe that reforming the educational system is a waste of media paper time and money because of the history of change attempts that have been undertaken. According to thesis, Owens (1998), reform efforts have not been effective in significantly altering the research paper outline, core of organizational culture in schools. This is because the nucleus of the core of organizational behavior is power. According to Friedman (1999), culture is the medium through which emotional processes work. Write About You! Therefore, we must first understand the power of culture to shape beliefs of research paper outline people who have the capacity to bring about change in education. School reform means to give new form to a school changing it in fundamental ways (Owens, 1998). This will be necessary in order to confront the attitudes that have developed in those who have lost faith in the procedures that have attempted change in an essay who inspires, the educational system over the past few years. It will be necessary to give up some of the power so that those who are involved in the institution will believe that there is a genuine desire to change the paper outline, organization in a positive, meaningful way. Schools can change through direction from the outside or they may change from within (Owens, 1998). It will probably take the latter to facilitate organizational change that will last.

When those involved in the organization are involved in what is a good, the decisions to change as well as how that change should come about, there is a greater possibility the change will be supported on a continuous basis. The traditional means of change in education is media research paper one that involves the spread of new ideas and practices, which is neither planned nor structured. It typically takes about fifteen years for bloomsburg university admissions essay an innovation to spread to about three percent of the school systems and another twenty years for the change to research paper, be diffused into an area about the size of an classification average state (Owens, 1998). In this way, change occurs very slowly and the pace of the change that does occur contributes to the attitude that nothing ever gets done with regard to change efforts in educational organizations. Greenfield and Ribbins (1993) point out that administrators and teachers are slow in media paper, adopting innovations. According to Owens (1998), the strategy by which money is spent may have greater impact on change than things such as per pupil expenditure.

This supports the notion that including those involved in the institution in for a research apa, each process of the media paper, change can enhance the possibility of university essay change. When those working in the organization are given a voice in the change and an opinion concerning how to implement it, there is media a greater likelihood that diffusion of that change may take place. Conversely, when change is mandated, those being controlled will not rally around the cause. Invention and write about you, improvements of modern technology may have an impact on media outline, the rate at which change occurs. Technology now provides the potential to transmit new information to an almost limitless number of individuals practically immediately. However, because of research paper this capability, we must be more careful about media outline what we consider appropriate innovations that are ready for diffusion. Strategies of Planned Change. There are several different ways to approach planned change. Robert Chinn cited three strategic orientations useful in planning and managing change as (1) empirical-rational strategies, (2) power-coercive strategies, and (3) normative-reeducative strategies (Owens, 1998).

Empirical-rational strategies focus on linking the findings of research to practices of education by improving communication between researchers and practitioners. This approach is based on the assumptions that: (1) new knowledge will be perceived by potential adopters as desirable and that (2) adopters will do what is desirable because it is in a complicated kindness thesis, their own self interest. Therefore this theory hinges on the production of new research, the belief that this research will improve the media paper outline, organization, and essay, that practitioners will be motivated to put forth the effort necessary to implement the new ideas. Power-coercive strategies of change differ from an empirical-rational approach in the willingness to use sanctions to obtain compliance. For example, under this strategy, rewards might be given to those who adapt ideas and practices while punishments may exist for those who do not. This strategy does not support the philosophy that workers should have voice in developing, implementing, and managing planned change. A normative-reeducative strategy is media paper outline based on an understanding of organizations and what thesis statement, people in them that is different from the direction taken by other classical or bureaucratic philosophies. Research Paper Outline! Those in the organization can deliberately shift the culture of the organization toward desired change.

This can be done by encouraging those working in the organization to address and modify, if necessary, their own attitudes and beliefs about the change to be implemented. Concern should be taken when attempting to bring about lasting change through the use of power-coercive strategies. Both empirical-rational and normative-reeducative approaches seem to be better alternatives because of the classification drivers, increased involvement of those within the organization either through acceptance or development of change procedures. Given the likelihood that organizations may have more success with lasting change when they include those involved in the organization, it seems that efforts toward organizational development must coincide with efforts to include everyone in the change process. According to Block (1993) allowing those in the organization to outline, have a voice in every aspect of the organization promotes a sense of ownership in the institution that can facilitate positive change. Organizational Development is defined as a coherent, systematically-planned, sustained effort at self-study and improvement, focusing on change in formal and informal procedures, processes, norms of structures, using behavioral science concepts (Owens, 1998). Furthermore, several concepts that characterize the process are the goal of organizational development, system renewal, a system approach, focus on people, an educational strategy, learning through experience, dealing with problems, a planned strategy, a change agent, and persuasive essay, involvement of top-level administration (Owens, 1998). The goal of organizational development is to improve the functioning of the organization itself. System renewal means that an research paper outline organization can develop self-renewing characteristics.

A system approach emphasizes the wholeness of the organizational system and the interrelatedness of its subsystems. Focus on people indicates that the university admissions, main concern is the media research paper outline, human social system of the organization. The educational strategy seeks to stimulate self-renewal by changing the behavior of the individuals within the organization. Learning through experience advocates the concept of learning by actually doing. Dealing with real problems deals with a similar issue in supporting that the organization deal with existing problems.

A planned strategy implies that the effort is planned systematically. It is necessary to how to for a research apa, have a change agent who has a vital and paper outline, specific role to how to write research paper apa, play. Finally, that one cannot change part of the system without affecting other parts of the system indicates the need for involvement of top-level administrators. When we have organizational development that includes the involvement of the organizations members we can have change efforts that truly make a difference. Deming devoted much of his time to outline, ideas concerning cooperation, participative management, and what is a good thesis statement, empowerment in outline, the workplace (Levin, 1998). He advocated transforming change rather than adaptive changes saying that schools have made adaptive changes over the years while remaining remarkably stable. According to Good and Brophy (1990) some aspects of schools allow for someone who inspires you stability which makes it possible to develop routines.

Deming believed that transforming change was a necessity that would change the organization into something very different than it was previously. Deming promoted several concepts that characterize organizational transformation as follows (Owens, 1998). The concept of total quality attempts to make every part as right as possible, to do it the first time, and to strive for research paper perfection. Management responsibility speaks to the primary responsibility for the shortcomings of the organizational performance as resulting from admissions essay management behavior rather than workers' carelessness. Testing is not the answer indicating the need to eliminate inspection on a mass basis by building equality into the product in the first place. Intrinsic motivation is important in enlisting willing workers and providing them with the proper tools rather than more testing. Emphasis on problem solving leads managers to enlist the expertise of the media research outline, worker. A Complicated Kindness Thesis! The elimination of performance ratings is necessary because quality is improved through cooperation rather than competition.

Quality of organizational performance lies in media research paper outline, placing the needs of the customer first emphasizing sensitivity to the needs of the write an outline for a paper, customer. Kaizen is a Japanese word that speaks to the concept of continuous improvement, not a one-time fix. These concepts support the idea that organizational change should be undertaken with the media research, involvement of the people working within the organization. When voice is given to those involved in the process, they will have a greater tendency to feel ownership in the organization and work in a more intrinsically motivated way. Additionally, according to Astuto, Clark, Read, McGree, and Fernandez (1994), when collaboration is used in place of competition those involved may feel they have a partnership with co-workers and administrators. Trends which affect the process of change. Several trends have been cited that may affect the essays, process of media research change as we know it. These trends will be areas of persuasive on torture concern over the next few years as society learns how instrumental they will be to our organizational infrastructures. They include the communications revolution, shifts in the intellectual division of labor, shifts in the funding streams of education, and demographic shifts and accessibility (Ward, 2000). The communications revolution includes the application of the Internet to media, educational processes. Essay On Torture! The uses of the Internet have expanded dramatically over media paper the past several years as evident by the rising use of the Internet to offer instructional enhancement.

We will have to essays, determine which aspects of this digital revolution will ultimately benefit our students and our institutions. The shifts in the intellectual division of labor have come about because of the capacity to communicate digitally over vast distances. Research Outline! For example, instead of collaborating with colleagues across the campus, individuals often will collaborate with colleagues across the world. This leaves one wondering what the social impact will be when people communicate digitally instead of face-to-face. There has been a major shift in about someone you, the funding streams of higher education. Educational organizations are receiving less revenue from media research paper outline sources such as tax dollars and tuition. These colleges will be looking for what is a good other ways to gain revenue in the near future, which will, quite possibly, extend into the world of business and paper outline, commerce. Finally, there have been shifts in accessibility.

This means that the university will increasingly serve a diverse population and must have a diversity of faculty, staff, and student populations in order to be truly representative of our society. This will also enhance the possibility that organizations will consist of individuals who take ownership in their work. In order to deal adequately with these trends and those that will emerge in the next few years, we should attempt to explore their possibilities rather than exploiting their potentials toward our own short-term gain. For example, some organizations are attempting to put as many courses as possible online in is a thesis, an effort to attain more students. While online courses are probably very useful, this concept should be explored fully before supporting a proposal to media outline, shift all our educational activities to the Internet. In supporting this, Shoemaker (1998) indicated that it is necessary to continue to grow but that problems that need to be considered include faculty power struggles, tenure, diversity issues and budget and space issues. The way change occurs is constantly changing. Furthermore, the how to write an outline research paper, change processes people perceive as effective are changing.

Upon entering the 21 st century, many believe that in order for media outline change processes to classification essays drivers, have a lasting, positive effect, all parties must be participative in terms of research paper involvement. This philosophy is supported throughout this paper. Transformational change is probably more representative of what today's society is looking for bloomsburg university admissions rather than developmental and transitional change. This is because when those involved in the organization influence the decisions to change and how that change should come about, there is a greater possibility that change will be supported on a continuous basis. Media Research! There is an essay who inspires you also a greater likelihood that changes which take place may be successfully spread throughout the system and to other systems. Media Research! In further support of this theme, both empirical-rational and normative-reeducative strategies seem to write paper, be better alternatives because of the higher level of involvement of those in the organization. Research Paper! When we have organizational development that includes the participation of its members, we accentuate the possibility of an essay about someone who inspires change within that organization. When voice is research paper given to those involved in what is a statement, the process they will have a greater tendency to feel ownership in the organization. Finally, in order to deal adequately with recent and coming trends affecting higher education we should attempt to explore their possibilities rather than exploit their potentials.

Technology can greatly enhance what we do in higher education provided that we do not commit to philosophies that diminish the media research outline, integrity of the educational process while attempting to take advantage of our new world of classification essays changing technology.
